Best Time to Visit the Lido di Venezia

June and September for the beach; spring and autumn for everything else.

The Lido has a humid subtropical-to-temperate climate, like the rest of Venice: warm to hot summers, mild springs and autumns, and chilly, damp winters. The beach season runs roughly mid-May to mid-September. The short answer: June or the first half of September for swimming with fewer crowds; April–May and late September–October for cycling and sightseeing.

Summer: June to August — the beach season

The bathing establishments are all open, the sea warms into the mid-20s and the Lido is at its liveliest. June is our favourite: long days, warm water and fewer people than in August, when Italians are on holiday and weekends get busy. Heat and humidity can be intense in July and August; mornings and evenings are the best times for cycling.

The Venice Film Festival: late August to early September

For about eleven days the Lido becomes the capital of world cinema. It is exciting to be here — red carpets, stars and public screenings — but hotel prices peak and rooms sell out months ahead. If the festival is not your reason to come, avoid these dates for a beach holiday.

September — the sweet spot

After the festival, the sea is still warm, the establishments stay open until mid-month or so, and the crowds thin fast. Early September is often the best time of all for a beach-and-city combination.

Spring and autumn — for cyclists and walkers

April, May, late September and October bring mild temperatures, blossom or golden light, and an island that belongs to the locals. It is the best time to ride to Malamocco, the Alberoni and Pellestrina, and prices are lower. Some beach businesses are closed, but the free beaches are open for walks.

Winter — quiet and atmospheric

From November to March the Lido is very quiet. Fog drifts across the lagoon, the beach is empty and many seasonal places close. Hotels that stay open are good value, and the Lido makes a peaceful base for seeing Venice’s museums — including during Carnival, when the centre is packed.

Acqua alta and the Lido: the high tides that flood parts of Venice mainly occur between October and January. The Lido sits higher than the historic centre and is far less affected, and the MOSE barriers at the lagoon inlets now protect the city on the highest tides.

Events worth planning around

  • Festa della Sensa (Ascension, May/June) — the Marriage of the Sea ceremony off the Lido and celebrations at San Nicolò.
  • Festa del Redentore (third weekend of July) — Venice’s great fireworks night over the San Marco basin.
  • Venice Film Festival (late August–early September) — on the Lido itself.
  • La Biennale — the Art and Architecture exhibitions alternate years, running from spring to November.

When to avoid

  • Festival fortnight if you want a cheap, quiet beach holiday.
  • August weekends at the central beaches — go south to the Alberoni instead.
  • November if you want sunshine: it is usually the wettest month.
Plan your days on the Lido

Beach in the morning, Venice by afternoon

The Lido is fifteen minutes by vaporetto from St Mark’s. Pair a day on the sand with a lagoon cruise, a bike ride to Malamocco or a trip to Murano and Burano — compare and book in a couple of taps.

Frequently asked questions

When is the beach season on the Lido?

Roughly from mid-May to mid-September, when the bathing establishments are open and lifeguards on duty. The warmest sea is usually in August.

What is the best month to visit the Lido di Venezia?

June for the beach with fewer crowds; early to mid-September for warm water after the festival; April–May and October for cycling and sightseeing.

When is the Venice Film Festival?

Every year from late August to early September, for about eleven days. Exact dates are announced by La Biennale in spring.

Is the Lido worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you want quiet. The beach is empty and misty, many seasonal businesses close, but hotels that stay open are good value and Venice is a short boat ride away.

Does the Lido flood with acqua alta?

Much less than the historic centre. The Lido is higher, and the MOSE barriers at the lagoon inlets are raised for exceptional tides.
