The Moorish-style facade of the Hotel Excelsior on the Lungomare of the Lido

Where to Stay on the Lido di Venezia

Beach by day, Venice by boat, and a quiet night’s sleep. Here is where to stay.

Staying on the Lido gives you something central Venice cannot: space, sea air, a beach on the doorstep and quiet evenings — while San Marco is still only about a quarter of an hour away by vaporetto. Hotels here are often better value than equivalents in the historic centre, and guests are exempt from Venice’s day-tripper access fee.

There are two sensible areas. The seafront, along the Lungomare, puts the beach across the road and includes the legendary Excelsior. The area around Santa Maria Elisabetta and the Gran Viale puts you a few minutes from the vaporetto — ideal if you will be in Venice every day.

Rates below are indicative starting prices for a double room and change constantly with season and demand — above all during the Film Festival. Every card links out to Trip.com for live availability.

How to choose

  • Mainly a beach holiday? Stay on the seafront and rent a capanna.
  • Mainly sightseeing in Venice? Stay near Santa Maria Elisabetta — every minute saved on the walk to the boat adds up.
  • Travelling with children? The Lido is ideal: look at apartments or hotels near the Blue Moon beach.
  • Coming for the Film Festival? Book as early as possible; anything within walking distance of the Palazzo del Cinema goes first.

Booking tips

  • Many Lido hotels are seasonal and close in winter; check opening dates.
  • Venice’s tourist tax is charged per person per night at your hotel, on top of the room rate.
  • Ask whether the hotel has an arrangement with a beach establishment — some include umbrellas or cabins.
  • Bikes: many hotels lend or rent them, which saves a trip to the rental shop.

Where to stay: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay on the Lido or in central Venice?

It depends on your priorities. The Lido is quieter, often cheaper, family-friendly and has the beach; central Venice puts you among the sights and the evening atmosphere. Many visitors love combining days in the city with nights on the Lido.

How far is the Lido from St Mark’s Square?

About 15–20 minutes by vaporetto from Santa Maria Elisabetta to San Zaccaria, next to St Mark’s Square. Add the walk from your hotel to the landing stage.

Do Lido hotel guests pay the Venice access fee?

No. Guests staying overnight in the Municipality of Venice, which includes the Lido, pay the hotel tourist tax instead and are exempt from the access fee — but should request an exemption on the official portal for fee days when they visit the centre.

Is the Hotel des Bains open?

No. The Grand Hotel des Bains closed in 2010 and has not reopened. The Excelsior, a few minutes along the seafront, is the Lido’s working grand hotel.

When should I book for the Film Festival?

Several months ahead. Lido hotels fill up quickly for the festival weeks at the end of August and start of September, and prices rise sharply.
